Città Alta, the old town is separated from the rest of Bergamo by the city walls built by the Venetians. The intact, six-kilometre ring was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 9 July 2017. Thanks to its location and protected position, the Città Alta still retains its mediaeval appearance, although the city already flourished during Roman times, centuries earlier.
Piazza Vecchia is considered the "renaissance parlor" where all the medieval streets of the upper city join together. At the center of the square is the Contarini Fountain, the main meeting place of locals and tourists alike.
San Giacomo Gate (“Porta San Giacomo”) used to be the entrance to Bergamo for those who came from Milan. It’s the only access to the Walls that can be perfectly seen from Viale Vittorio Emanuele, the axis crossing Lower Bergamo from South to North, both for its position and for its colour.
The Cappella Colleoni (Italian: "Colleoni Chapel") is a chapel and mausoleum attached to the Basilica of St. Mary Major in the northern Italian city of Bergamo.
Dedicated to the saints Bartholomew, Mark and John the Baptist, it was built between 1472 and 1476 as the personal shrine for the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni, a member of one of the city's most notable families, and his beloved daughter Medea
In the heart of Piazza Vecchia stands the Torre Civica, the tower also known as the “Campanone”. Soaring to 52.76 m (173 ft) in height, it offers visitors a breath-taking view of the old city. The biggest bell in Lombardy is found at the top. Still today, every evening at 10 pm, the bell chimes 100 times, an exhilarating reminder of the closure of the gates of the city along the city walls during Venetian rule.
